Under the NEC 2026 EV charger requirements, hardwiring is now mandatory for certain Level 2 installations. Specifically, a hardwired connection is required if the circuit exceeds 60 amps or if the manufacturer’s instructions explicitly specify a hardwired setup.
While plug-in NEMA 14-50 installations are still permitted in some residential applications, the new code imposes much stricter conditions on them to reduce risks of arc faults and loose connections. If you choose a plug-in configuration, you must ensure:
- The outlet is within sight of the charger or incorporates a lockout/tagout device.
- A GFCI breaker is installed to feed the circuit (a new mandate for all EV circuits under the 2026 code).
Because these additional safety requirements for plug-in units can add significant complexity and cost, hardwiring has become the simpler and more reliable pathway for compliance.
