While plug-in NEMA 14-50 installations are still permitted in some residential applications, the new code imposes much stricter conditions on them to reduce risks of arc faults and loose connections. If you choose a plug-in configuration, you must ensure:
- The outlet is within sight of the charger or incorporates a lockout/tagout device.
- A GFCI breaker is installed to feed the circuit (a new mandate for all EV circuits under the 2026 code).
